National Geographic has announced the winning photos of its popular Travel Photographer of the Year 2018 photo contest. The grand prize was awarded to Japanese photographer Reiko Takahashi, who captured an underwater photo of a humpback whale calf's tail. The winning photo, titled "Mermaid," was selected from over 13,000 entries received this year. Describing the moment she captured the scene, she said: "It was a special scene for me, to be able to take a photo of the calf, completely relaxed in gentle waters." Photographers from 142 countries submitted over 20,000 jaw-dropping pictures that were shot on everything from high-end professional cameras to mobile phones, in categories including 'faces, people, cultures'; the natural world and the beauty of light. The winning images can be seen at the TPOTY exhibition, which is free, and will be on show at LondonBridgeCity next Spring.
